What is Axis Church Culture?
Culture is not a set of rules pinned to a wall - it's the lived expression of what a community truly believes.
At Axis Church, culture is everything. It is the soil in which
people grow, the atmosphere that welcomes the stranger, and the foundation upon which everything we build rests.
A fruit tree cannot grow and bear fruit in toxic soil.
The same is true of a church. If the culture is unhealthy, marked by criticism, pride, passivity or disunity, no amount of gifting, programming or effort will produce lasting fruit.
But when the culture is right, growth is almost inevitable.
OUR CULTURE
12 Values That Define Who We Are
These are not aspirational ideals - they are the lived, day-to-day expression of what it means to be part of Axis Church.
Each is rooted in Romans 12, Hebrews 13 or Ephesians 4
Passion for Jesus, Love for Others, Compassion for the Lost
Passion for Jesus must be visible in everything we do, worship, service, welcome. We are a Gospel preaching
church and every message includes an appeal, because lives are always at stake.
Romans 12:11 calls us to be
fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.
Ephesians 4:13 points us towards the unity of faith and knowledge of Christ.
A Desire to Do Things Excellently
Where excellence is valued, churches grow. Where there is sloppiness, churches stagnate.
Ephesians 4:12
reminds us that gifts are given to equip God's people for works of service.
We give our best, after every service
we reflect on what went well and what can improve
Generosity in Finances, Skills and Time
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 - whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully.
Romans 12:8 includes generosity as a
spiritual gift.
Ephesians 4:28 calls us to work so that we may give to those in need.
We give finances, skills and time, cheerfully and consistently.
Holding Ministry Lightly, Always Training Others
Ephesians 4:12 is explicit: gifts are given to equip others for works of service. Great leaders reproduce themselves.
We hold ministry loosely, always training, delegating and releasing. Gripping 'your' ministry too tightly is a blockage to growth
A Servant-Hearted Attitude
Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45).
Romans 12:16 calls us to associate with the lowly.
Ephesians 4:2 speaks of humility, gentleness and patience.
Axis Church is a place to paricipate, not spectate
serving out of humility, not selfish ambition
A Positive Attitude in All Things
Romans 15:2 calls us to build one another up.
Ephesians 4:29 is clear: let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, only what builds others up.
Gossip and negativity are not the Axis Church way. We deal with conflict
directly, with love and firmness, and do not let it fester.
Doing Life Together, Not Just Sundays
Hebrews 10:25 calls us not to neglect meeting together.
Romans 12:15 says rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.
Ephesians 4:16 speaks of the whole body joined together.
Axis Church members genuinely enjoy one another and commit to community beyond Sunday
Humility in Leadership
Ephesians 4:2 calls us to all humility and gentleness.
Romans 12:16 says do not be haughty.
Strong but arrogant leaders will never grow a church.
Axis leaders are strong in purpose and unity - but marked by genuine humility.
God sees it, and He blesses it.
Authenticity, Honesty and Transparency
No masks. No performance.
Romans 12:9 says let love be genuine.
Ephesians 4:25 calls us to put away
falsehood and speak truth with our neighbours.
Authenticity is modelled from leadership down. People should feel free to be real, knowing they will be met with grace and truth.
Respect and Support for Pastors and Leaders
Hebrews 13:17 calls us to obey and submit to our leaders, who keep watch over our souls.
Ephesians 4:11-12
shows that pastors and teachers are God's gifts to the church.
Unity under godly leadership is key, God blesses unity and will not bless disunity.
A Desire to Learn, Grow and Be Fruitful
Ephesians 4:14-15 warns against spiritual immaturity, being tossed about by every new teaching and calls us
to grow up into Christ.
Teaching the Bible is foundational at Axis. We learn not as an academic exercise, but so that what we learn we put into practice and bear lasting fruit.
Openness to the Holy Spirit, Guarded Against Extremism
Ephesians 4:3 calls us to maintain the unity of the Spirit.
Romans 12:11 says be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.
Axis Church fully embraces the Holy Spirit and His gifts - but guards against anything that distracts from the
Gospel, serving the poor and loving our community.
Church community is built on honest, direct communication. Ephesians 4:15 calls us to speak the truth in love.
Matthew 18 gives us a clear pattern for addressing concerns,
one that protects relationships and gives leadership a real opportunity to respond.
HEALTHY COMMUNICATION
A Framework for Speaking Truth in Love
1
Speak for Yourself
Use 'I' statements rather than hiding behind a group.
'I felt disconnected from the sermon last week' is far more useful than 'People are saying the sermons aren't landing.'
Own your perspective
2
Go Directly
If the concern involves the pastor, go to the pastor.
Matthew 18 outlines this pattern for a reason.
It protects the relationship and gives leadership a real opportunity to respond.
3
Be Specific
Vague concerns cannot be addressed.
Name the situation, the date, the impact.
Give the pastor
something concrete to work with.
Specifics lead to solutions.
4
Ask for a Conversation, Not Confrontation
Frame it as wanting to understand or share perspective,
not as an accusation.
The goal is always restoration and growth,
not winning an argument.
5
Represent Only Yourself
If others share your concern, encourage them to speak for themselves.
Do not be their spokesperson.
That puts you in an unfair position and puts the pastor in an impossible one.
